SENGAI - Master Zen Painter_

This month MI Magazine looks at the magnificent book Sengai - Master Zen Painter. This is a real prized collection for anyone interested in art and zen and is certainly at the top end of quality publications on this topic.

The book is about Gibbon Sengai (1750 - 1837) a Zen master of the Rinzai School,
who after many years of monastery training and self-exploring was elected abbot of Shofukuji, which is Japan's oldest Zen temple. Sengai was known for his unorthodox teaching style and humor and

is one of the most outstanding artists Japan has produced. In this book we see some of his famous pieces such as: famous works like Self Portrait, The Meditating Frog and Tea-Bowl Box. All beautifully presented and clearly displayed they are a joy to see and my personal favorite was Two Cranes (page 127) which is quite outstanding. I don't think this book will give you any secrets into understanding Zen or Zen painting but it is extremely interesting to read and visually the art is beautiful. There is a great chapter on Zen Humor and the detailed explanation make for very interesting reading.

Appearances are all illusory forms.
Worldly fame and saintly titles,
Every one of them is a vain voice.
This year my age is fifty plus two.
The ear and eye have lost their former sharpness.

When both mind and technique are forgotten, then its single flavor will always appear.

Knowing the time and place of coming,
Knowing the time and place of leaving,
Not loosening hands clasped to the cliff
The cloud is too dense to see the place

"Every stoke of my brush is the overflow of my inmost heart."
